The Geriatric Emergency Medicine Section is dedicated to providing high quality, patient-centered healthcare for older adults. We implement best practices to develop sustainable change and optimize continuity of care for our patients and their support teams. Training, education, collaboration, policy, and innovative practices will drive our progress in navigating the complexities integral to geriatric emergency care.

Leah Steckler

Bio

Dr. Steckler currently serves as the Director of the Geriatric Emergency Department and as an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine (EM) at the George Washington University (GWU). In addition to practicing as an EM physician, Dr. Steckler provides care to patients at a local skilled nursing facility. She completed a certificate in geriatrics at GWU in 2021 and has a special interest in caring for older adults in the greater Washington, D.C. community.

During her career, she has served as the President of the D.C. chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians from 2021-2022, advocating for emergency department patients and physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. She additionally has experience working on Capitol Hill as a health policy fellow with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease policy.

Dr. Steckler’s research interests include telehealth and falls in older adults, ageism, delirium screening, and other quality initiatives in the geriatric emergency department setting.

Dr. Steckler obtained her Doctor of Medicine from the Drexel University College of Medicine in 2016 and completed her Emergency Medicine residency at GWU in 2020, serving as Chief Resident in her final year. Her undergraduate degree is in Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Science from the University of Michigan.
