The George Washington University Department of Emergency Medicine is unique in having one of the largest sections devoted to policy-related research, implementation, and advocacy. A number of our section members have dual appointments with other policy-oriented organizations including the Department of Veterans Affairs, Health and Human Services, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Association of American Medical Colleges, RAND Corporation, and congressional offices. Our section is dedicated to educating residents and medical students about how the current health care policy environment impacts our practice as physicians. We do this through monthly and quarterly didactic sessions and an Annual Health Policy Grand Rounds, in which invitees from a wide variety of backgrounds, including the federal and legislative branches of government, inform our department about cutting edge issues related to health policy. Our section also runs a health policy fellowship. The fellowship is a two-year training program open to graduating or recently graduated physicians from emergency medicine residencies who are committed to lifelong careers in health policy and medicine. The fellowship combines didactic health policy teaching, public health coursework, leadership development, and practical training in health policy to provide fellows with an unmatched learning and career development experience.
